Day #10 June 6 2008

Well this is Ila tonight so probably won't be as "flowery" because I am tired. We had breakfast at our motel this AM and had opportunity to visit a mounted police officer. He was very nice and friendly. Somebody ask him about the red coat and he said they only wear those on special occasions. Otherwise their uniform is pretty much like other police officers. Linda got the van serviced before we started our drive for the day.

The planned drive was from Fort Nelson to Watson Lake. That is about 360 miles. It was an absolutely beautiful drive. The road was in mostly good shape. There were a few places that were gravel, some rough but for the most part, it was good. They have all the bad spots marked well. We crossed several bridges that had metal grating for the floor. If anyone remembers the old Vine Street bridge in Ottumwa, they were similar but much nicer. We also crossed one suspended bridge built in 1942 but very well maintained.

We saw a variety of animals along the way. There were deer, caribou, stone sheep (lost track of the number), one "lonely" black bear, three buffalo.

We "found" three gentlemen bikers from Iowa City. We met them at Toad River Lodge when we stopped for a "necessary" break. The son of one had been manager of Bonanza in Oskaloosa on two different occasions. Uh, they just happen to be staying at the same lodging place tonight as we are. It is an old renovated Air Force barricks building. The man who owns it is originally from Germany and I think he said his wife is from Austria. He has taken this old 40's building and made it into a beautiful lodge. He has "rules and regulations" which I guess it sounds as though a person better abide by -- No Smoking, doors are locked at midnight. He says the rooms are all positioned just as they were when it was used by the Air Force. It was in a sad state of repair but he has done an absolutely wonderful job of restoring it. The showers and baths are all where they originally were. IT IS NICE! The price is so reasonable it is almost unbelievable. He is proud of it and has every reason to be. Oh, yes kids of our! Don't worry! No hanky panky will take place. Well, I guess maybe I can't speak for everyone. Oh gosh! Now you have something else to worry about -- bears, police and now MEN!!! Just kidding.

We arrived in town just in time to rush and get supper before the place closed. It appears that most everything closes by 7:30 pm. So we won't get into too much trouble tonight. The one that writes usually reads to the other two before we post but they are out visiting with some of the other people who are staying here so I'm just going to post and they can just suffer the consequences!
